Dogwood really captures the serenity of the american forest. While the painting was painted based on Yosemite Valley in California, the summer glow reflected on the trees give the painting a home-like feeling. The American character is seen as someone who wants to get away from their problems and once in awhile get that sense of calm and comfort. In the Grapes of Wrath that comfort came to Rosasharn only at the end of the book when she took the transformation into motherhood, while Hester Prynne in the Scarlet Letter is happy when she thinks about being free. All people need to escape once in awhile.
